It wasn’t just Wales who all but secured their place in next year’s European finals, Iceland also upset the applecart with a shock result in Holland.
To be the fair, the result really hinged on a red and a controversial penalty. Nonetheless, it was a penalty dispatched by Swansea City’s midfield ace Gylfi Sigurdsson. Holland’s Bruno Martins Indi was dismissed in the first half, and after that, the Dutch struggled to break down a resolute Iceland defence.
Sigurdsson’s strike has put Iceland a staggering eight point above the Netherlands with just three games remaining. It turned out to be a very successful night for Wales and indeed Iceland.
