Swansea’s Pass Master Pulled the Strings Against Chelsea

Swansea City’s midfield ace Jonjo Shelvey put in a superb display against champions Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

shelvShelvey looked fitter and hungrier as ever, as he played an integral part in Swansea’s excellent 2-2 draw in west London on the opening weekend. The midfielder was up against Nemanja Matic and Cesc Fabregas in the middle of the park, but it was the Swansea man who earned all the plaudits after the match.

Sky Sports have compiled a list of the weekend’s top passers. The Swans completed a very respectable 386 passes to Chelsea’s 444. Matic was the Blues’ top passer with 45, but Shelvey pulled the strings in the heart of the Swansea midfield completing an outstanding 52.

Shelvey, who has worked extra hard in the summer to be trimmer than ever, come under some serious criticism from Garry Monk midway through last season. However, the ex-Charlton Athletic and Liverpool man responded in the best possible way with an exceptional second half of the campaign.

The Swansea boss has tipped his star midfielder to get a recall to the England squad on the back of his fine performance at Stamford Bridge. If Shelvey can push on from his excellent start to the new season, then there’s no reason whatsoever why he won’t get a call from Roy Hodgson very soon.
